Why is it called a hood scoop? A popular muscle car gimmick was to incorporate an integral scoop into the engine air cleaner and extend the entire assembly through a hole in the hood. Since the scoop assembly was rigidly mounted to the engine, you could see the scoop vibrating whenever the engine was running — hence the “shaker” nickname.
