As part of our monthly cover story, we interviewed Dambuster Studios’ senior render programmer Aaron Ridge and technical art director Dan Evans-Lawes about designing Dead Island 2’s procedural FLESH system that allows players to tear zombies from limb from limb. The pair happily simplify the tool’s purpose as transforming zombie character models into “meat pinatas,” with layers of exterior skin protecting internal organs.
