The Super Mario Bros. Movie Has Broken All These Box Office Records

The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Minions studio Illumination and Nintendo is putting up huge numbers at the box office, but just how much of a success is the animated film? The Hollywood Reporter dug into this and rounded up all the records that the film has set.
The movie opened with $377 million worldwide, which makes it the biggest worldwide opening of all time for an animated movie, surpassing the previous record-holder Frozen 2 ($358 million). The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned $146.4 million for the Friday-Sunday period in the US, which is second only to Incredibles 2, which made $183 million stateside for its opening weekend in 2018.
At $171 million from international markets for its opening weekend, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is also the second-biggest international opening of all time for an animated movie. It trails only Frozen 2, which made $228.2 million from foreign markets for its debut.
